Ukraine’s sports activities minister has condemned the choice to permit six Russians and 4 Belarusians to compete beneath their nation’s flags at subsequent month’s Winter Paralympics as “disappointing and outrageous”.

“The flags of Russia and Belarus haven’t any place at worldwide sporting occasions that stand for equity, integrity, and respect,” stated Matvii Bidnyi in response to the Worldwide Paralympic Committee’s resolution on Monday. “These are the flags of regimes which have turned sport right into a device of conflict, lies, and contempt. In Russia, Paralympic sport has been made a pillar for these whom Putin despatched to Ukraine to kill – and who returned from Ukraine with accidents and disabilities,” he added.

Russia’s flag and anthem has not been heard at an Olympics or Paralympics since Sochi in 2014 due to the state-sponsored doping scandal and the invasion of Ukraine. Nevertheless, in September the IPC lifted its ban, earlier than confirming on Monday that Russian and Belarusian athletes could be allowed to compete. Bidnyi urged the IPC to rethink its resolution earlier than the Video games start on 6 March.

“Athletes and para-athletes in Russia glorify the conflict and obtain state honours,” he stated. “That’s the reason Ukraine imposed sanctions on sports activities propagandists, the Paralympic Committee of Russia, and its president, Pavel Rozhkov.

“Giving them a platform means giving a voice to conflict propaganda. When the Russian flag is raised on the worldwide stage, it turns into a part of Russia’s propaganda machine,” he added. “It sends a message to the world that the conflict is ‘regular’. No, it isn’t regular. It’s deeply outrageous that officers of the IPC refuse to grasp this.”

The tradition secretary Lisa Nandy additionally urged the IPC to assume once more, saying it had made “utterly the improper resolution”. “Permitting athletes from Russia and Belarus to compete beneath their very own flags whereas the brutal invasion of Ukraine continues sends a horrible message,” Nandy wrote on X. “The IPC ought to rethink this resolution urgently.”

In the meantime, on Monday the proprietor of Ukrainian soccer membership Shakhtar Donetsk stated he had donated greater than $200,000 to the skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych, who was disqualified from the Winter Olympics for eager to put on a “helmet of reminiscence”, depicting 24 athletes killed within the conflict with Russia.
