Anglers from Michigan, Ohio fined total of $3,260 for fishing out of season on Frood Lake, and banned from fishing in Ontario for one year

Two anglers from the United States reeled in hefty fines for a series of fishing violations on Frood Lake in Killarney Provincial Park.

On June 20, a conservation officer carried out an inspection of two men staying at Charlton Lake Camp near Willisville, Ont., 20 minutes south of Espanola.

The inspection revealed that the fishing group had caught and retained 22 smallmouth bass throughout the week and were in possession of two large bags of unidentifiable fish fillets.

However, the smallmouth bass season in that area did not open until June 21 — after the fish had already been caught.

Bradley Barker of Dayton, Ohio pleaded guilty to catching and retaining fish during the closed season and possessing fish that had been skinned so that the species could not be easily identified. He was fined a total of $1,630 and is prohibited from possessing an Ontario fishing licence or engaging in any fishing activities in Ontario for one year.

Mark Burger of Grand Ledge, Michigan pleaded guilty to catching and retaining fish during the closed season and possessing fish that had been skinned so that the species could not be easily identified. He was fined a total of $1,630 and is prohibited from possessing an Ontario fishing licence or engaging in any fishing activities in Ontario for one year.

Justice of the Peace Diane Lafleur heard the case in the Ontario Court of Justice, Elliot Lake, on Sept. 11.
