Uttar Pradesh says GPS tracking curbs theft, diversion in food grain supply

Uttar Pradesh said a GPS-based tracking system has put an effective check on theft, leakage and diversion of food grains under the Public Distribution System (PDS) across the state.

The movement of food grains from depots to fair price shops is now fully digitally monitored through a single-stage doorstep delivery system and GPS tracking across more than 5,000 vehicles. The system enables end-to-end tracking of every sack of food grain, helping prevent diversion, theft and black marketing.

GPS devices are put into service for the transportation of the food grain transportation in the state. This allows real-time tracking of all transportation from Food Corporation of India depots to fair price shops.

“Every detail, including where the vehicle started, where it stopped, and whether it reached its destination within the stipulated time, is being recorded in the control system,” the UP government said in a release.

GPS tracking has also been made mandatory during paddy procurement in the 2025-26 Kharif marketing season. GPS devices have been installed in 3,773 vehicles used to transport paddy from procurement canters to rice mills in all districts of the state. Additionally, 1,428 vehicles transporting coarse grains like maize, sorghum, and millet have also been connected to GPS. This has made the entire supply chain, from government procurement to storage depots, transparent.

The state has abolished the system of block warehouses and implemented a single-stage- door-step delivery model. Under this model, food grains are being delivered directly from Food Corporation of India depots to fair price shops. This entire work is being carried out by contractors appointed through e-tenders, reducing human intervention, and ensuring accountability. This model, along with GPS tracking, has become the backbone of transparency in the public distribution system.

A total of 8.03 lakh metric tons of food grains and coarse grains have been allocated to selected beneficiaries in the state so far in the financial year 2025-26. 36850. 35 metric tons of sugar have been allocated for Antyodaya beneficiaries in the financial year 2025-26.

GPS tracking systems are ensuring that these food grains reach beneficiaries without theft, without cutbacks, and on time.
