The Spectator (India) was first established in 1855 and quickly became an influential newspaper in the Indian subcontinent. It focused on politics, international events, and cultural affairs.
In its early years, the paper was well known for its progressive views on social reform, advocating for women’s rights and ending caste discrimination. It was also one of the first newspapers to hire female journalists and promote Indian literature across the country.
At the same time, The Spectator ran stories about British rule in India, covering topics such as military actions and economic exploitation. This led to some lawsuits from both India and Britain, with some of its writers being jailed or fined.
The paper has recently launched its online website, SpectatorDaily.com, to reach a wider audience.
