OPASATIKA – Three people were killed in a crash early this morning on Highway 11 west of Kapuskasing.
The crash between a tractor-trailer and pick-up truck happened around 12:30 a.m. today (Dec. 21) on Highway 11 between Chauvette Road and Hyundair Road in Opasatika Township.
Four people were in the pick-up truck at the time. A 41-year-old, a 15-year-old and a 12-year-old were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was brought to the hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
Highway 11 remains closed in both directions between Cochrane and Hearst.
Police are working to accommodate drivers stranded due to the lengthy closure.
“Due to Hwy. 11 closure, drivers are parking at commercial lots throughout Hearst. To assist those motorists during this time, a mobility shuttle bus will circulate within town to all those parking lots to bring people to food and washroom facilities and back to their vehicle. The shuttle will travel in a loop with no defined schedule. People can wave at the driver to stop for pick-up,” wrote OPP on Facebook around 1:30 p.m.
The cause of the crash is not known yet. The ongoing investigation involves the Office of the Chief Coroner for Ontario, as well as multiple OPP units.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident is asked to call Kapuskasing OPP at 1-800-222-1122. To remain anonymous, call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
