South African beaches have come alive this festive season amid the scorching summer temperatures – from Durban’s busy Golden Mile to the tourist hot spots like Cape Town’s Camps Bay.
While some have attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors, others have remained relatively untouched.

This week, beach-goers took advantage of the hot weather and festive fun. On TikTok, South Africans have been sharing videos of sea and sand adventures.
In Durban, numerous clips showed crowded beaches filled with families and young children.

In the Eastern Cape, a number of beaches appeared somewhat untouched by civilisation.

Such a wide open sandy beach with lots of space for just chilling or beach walks. The water is good for swimming (it almost forms a bit of a sheltered bay), there are toilet facilities, and also a tidal pool which is great if you’ve got kids. And if you visit, dont forget to check out @kiddsbeachtearoom next to the tidal pool, delicious food & ocean views (we even saw dolphins twice! 🐬) and a jungle gym /play area for kids. DURBAN WATER POLLUTION IN SPOTLIGHT AGAIN
Meanwhile, Durban’s beaches are in the spotlight again after a bumper week, including the public holiday – 16 December – the Day of Reconciliation.
In the aftermath, eThekwini city officials closed four beaches due to water pollution – Blue Lagoon, eThekwini, Country Club, and Battery beaches.
Water quality tests revealed the presence of high levels of pollution indicators like E. coli.
Over the weekend, three of the four beaches reopened; however, Blue Lagoon remains closed for swimming due to elevated levels of pollution and bacteria.
Beach-goers are encouraged to check the official eThekwini municipal beach status pages or notice boards at beaches before swimming.
