UCFW Locals 175 and 633 make a total of $180,000 in donations to food banks and charities across Ontario this Christmas
The United Food and Commercial Workers Union has made a $3,000 donation to the Sudbury Food Bank.
The donation was part of $180,000 in donations UCFW Locals 175 and 633 made to food banks and charities across Ontario this Christmas.
“Our executive board members know that our local union is well-positioned to offer this support, and I remain deeply proud of their ongoing commitment to the communities across the province where they live and work,” said Kelly Tosato, president of UFCW Local 175, in a news release.
On Dec. 5, UFCW Local 175 Region 8 Director Derik McArthur and Local 175 Executive Board Vice President Paula Castilloux presented a cheque for $3,000 to Dan Xilon, executive director of the Sudbury Food Bank.
“It has always been a true pleasure to work with the team at UFCW 175 & 633,” said Xilon in the release. “Their continuous support and belief in our efforts to serve and feed our region’s hungry and less fortunate have allowed us to continue to make a true difference in meeting our community’s needs. BDSFB team looks forward to continuing to work with such caring individuals in the future.”
In the release, the unions highlighted the fact that in March, nearly 2.2 million people visited food banks in Canada,” surpassing the previous year’s record-high. In fact, the number of people who have visited a food bank in the province has more than doubled in the last six years, according to HungerCount.”
Supporting the work of food banks, when so many Canadians are struggling to make ends meet, is an important effort, Tosato said in the release.
“Food banks and charitable groups play a vital role but their efforts are only a temporary solution that cannot address the systemic root causes of food insecurity,” added Tosato. “Without real substantial change, the number of people relying on food bank use and other charities just to survive will continue to grow as more and more people get left behind by a system focused solely on putting profit over people.”
