On Wednesday, Amazon unveiled a stunning picture of an “agentic” future in which Alexa+, the company’s enhanced version of Alexa, manages a wide range of routine chores, from ordering takeout to locating appliance repair technicians.
With its extensive, customer-focused agent tool, Amazon may be the first to market if it can meet expectations. The business wants to combine the capacity to access first- and third-party apps, services, and platforms in a completely autonomous, intelligent manner with a more expressive, natural Alexa that is driven by generative AI models.
Amazon Alexa and Echo VP Daniel Rausch stated in a keynote Wednesday
“We believe that the future is full of agents — we have believed this for some time,”. “There will be many AI agents out there doing things for customers, many of them will have specialized skills … And we’ve also always believed that in a world full of AI, these agents should interact with each other. They should interoperate seamlessly for customers.”
For a tech firm trying to revive its outdated assistant, that would be a huge win. Amazon has reportedly spent billions of dollars on its hardware division, but Alexa has not generated much money despite the company’s years-long investment.
The next big thing in AI is agents, a vague and increasingly diluted phrase that refers to AI models that may act on behalf of a user. Agents, according to the tech sector, are essential for deriving value from ever-more complex models. Agents claim to streamline agenda items and low-hanging duties, increasing overall productivity for both individuals and enterprises.
At least that’s the concept. Agents have thus far mostly fallen short.
Agents that can take over a browser and carry out tasks have been released by prominent AI laboratories, such as Anthropic and OpenAI. However, they frequently make mistakes and need some assistance to complete more complex activities. There are no set release dates for other ambitious initiatives at agents, such as Google’s Project Mariner, which is still in the prototype stage.
